The conference

On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, ASC was the promoter of a large international conference,

The Magic of Cinema Behind the Camera

Profile, characteristics and prospects of production designers, costume designers, set decorators and craftsmen in the perspective of the 10th anniversary of the Scenografia&Costume magazine.

Italy’s Ministry of Culture launched a call for organising the conference, which had the goal to outline the specific characteristics of behind-the-scenes careers and their urgent needs to public and private institutions. Its main highlight is on a new approach to the author’s right that can render justice to the authorship of production and costume designers during the creative process for film, theatre and television, and the compelling necessity for higher vocational training, so that the quality of the work of professionals, craftspeople and workers can be maintained at the levels of excellence they have always been internationally renowned for. Indeed, the latter are now at risk more than ever due to new production requirements and new technological challenges. For this reason, ACTA - Associazione Cultura Turismo Ambiente and the SARAS department of the Sapienza University of Rome were entrusted with carrying out research into the profiles of the costume designer, production designer and set decorator; into the way the job has evolved; into the economic supply chain and the production dynamics. The related results were shared during the conference. In the afternoon session, three thematic panels were scheduled, namely Comparison between professional evolution in Europe and abroad; The professions facing the new production needs and the challenges emerging from the algorithm; Archiving and author’s rights: the importance of conservation for the intellectual property of works.
